H-G Firearms has been a full service gunsmithing shop for nearly 30 years. Like many outfits, we began with general repairs. This was followed very quickly by a complete blue shop. And shortly thereafter we added custom rifle barrel services. From there on we have continued to grow and evolve or sevices and options. What follows is a general overview of what we do. But by no means is this anything like a complete list!!!! There are so many things that encompass the term "gunsmithing" that it would be difficult at best to list them all on one brief webpage! If you have an idea or a need give us a call or e-mail and we will se what we can do to accomadate.
GENERAL GUNSMITHING
I'll be honest, I hate the above term. If you think about it, virtually every gunsmithing job is in reality a "custom" job. No two are really the same. Be it a simple repair, a complete re-finish, or a full blown rifle build, each job has it's own peculiarities that set it apart.
At H-G Firearms we we never view any job as "too small". Sadly, this all to common sentiment has come to prevail in todays gunsmithing enviroment. We view every job as important. And we try to treat each job with the same respect and devotion to detail.
We pride ourselves on being versitile and resourceful when it comes to getting you pet rifle, or family heirloom back in operation when it goes sour. And we will try to to do so in an affordable manner. Sadly though, it is getting harder and harder to get some of those older guns back up a running. Parts are becoming more and more scarce as "Buy Backs", and politically correct weapons destruction programs, have tragically depleted the available source of spare parts for many older guns. We have the ability to fabricate many parts, and will gladly do so when economics or sentimental value dictate. And, we have a store of over 30 years of spare parts from which to "scrounge". Still we will, and do, run into guns that just can't be affordable or conveniently repaired. Sorry.
We also like to think we are wise enough to know if we are "In over our heads". there seems to be a reluctance among gunsmiths to admit that a job is too much for their skill, or outside their realm of expertise. I don't understand this. There are jobs that I can't or don't do. There are jobs that are better suited being sent to true experts in the field. (For instance; If you have a valuable Colt revolver, or Winchester Lever Action, in need of a historically correct restoration, I am going to recommend Doug Turnbull everytime. This is his forte and his work is impeccable.) I don't see this as a short coming, but rather a common sense approach to helping my customers get the correct repair or service for thier needs. Every craftsman has his or her limits. I consider it important to understand these and treat them accordingly.
CUSTOM RIFLE SMITHING
Varmint, target, big game, dangerous game, or just plain old fun! Whatever your custom rifle need, we can supply it.
The heart of any accurate and quality custom project is careful, precision machine work. Not magic. Not Gimmickry. Just good old fashion attention to detail, and the use of quality tools and materials. In reality there are dozens of way to "skin a cat" when it comes to accurately chambering and fitting a custom rifle. The way we do it may be different that the way other to smiths do it. We will gladly explain our process and our views on the subject if your interested. Just give us a shout. What we do know is that the method we use produces an accurate, top quality product everytime - Or it doesn't go out.
A custom rifle is a big investment in time and money and there is no reason to settle for something you don't want. To that end we try to cover every detail before we start. Never be afraid to ask a question. Nothing is "stupid" or "ridiculous". Guys tend to let pride get in the way too much. If you don't know something, or aren't sure of something just ask. No one here will ever make fun of a serious question!!!!! Next to precision work and quality materials, COMMUNICATION is the key to getting a proper custom rifle built.
We hold our chambers to a concentricity of .0005 or less runout. We only use top quality piloted chamber reamers in our process. And we absolutely never settle for "good enough". (I get asked these two questions a lot so i thought I'd through this in here.)
We do offer a couple of "packages" and are working on a couple more, largely based on customer request. We think these offer a good value. If you have any suggestions on these lines let us hear them.
Wildcats are a passion at H-G Firearms. They are quite literally how, and why we got into reloading, bulletmaking, gunsmithing, and custom rifle building. Don't be afraid to ask. If we don't have a reamer we will gladly add it to the line up.
As with our general services above, we will not hesitate to admit that a certain job may be beyond our scope of expertise. These days most of our rifles are built on synthetic stocks, with certain laminates running a close second. We have become very adept and familiar with fitting, finishing, and detailing these materials. We also do a good bit of work on regular walnut stocks. We are well acquainted with proper bedding, inletting, and finish techniques, and can do a pretty fair job with checking tools when called upon. BUT! I am going to be the first to admit that an ultra high grade custom wood stock, with fancy, fine checkering is not on the top of my to-do list. Really fine craftsmanship in this arena is a rare skill. And frankly I feel a lot better recommending a great stockmaker to deal with your highly figured (Literally and figuratively) blank. A specialist in this arena will be a better choice under most circumstances. Again, if you have something specific in mind give us a shout. We'll never be afraid to tell you if it is outside our scope.
CUSTOM HANDGUN WORK
While we do general repairs and upgrade work (Correction of timing, undersized cylinders, trigger work, etc.) on most models of handgun, our full custom work is limited largely to the Ruger Single Action Models at this time. Here we will undertake most projects from simple trigger and action services to full cartridge conversions. Custom rifle work makes up the bulk of our smithing duties. But handguns have been our personal passion for 30 years. We are working to get a price list up of both general and custom services along with some photos. Until then just contact us with your ideas, and we'll work out a detailed quote to fit your needs.
SHOTGUNS, 10-22'S, RIMFIRE, MUZZLE LOADERS
What are you interested in doing? We have built many custom 10-22's and find them one of the most enjoyable guns to work on, as well as one of the most versitile rimfires around.
Shotguns offer a great many possibilities, from tactical and defensive set ups, to full out custom hunting rigs. Let us know what you have in mind and we'll work with you to build the perfect scattergun.
The others? Just ask. We have tackled some interesting and unusual products over the years. If you have something in mind and it falls within our skill sets we'll try hard to make your project a reality!!!!
